Asus O!play

Here the first hack for the Asus O!Play HD Media player.

Network browsing is a bit buggy at the moment, but one way to add shortcuts to the 'my_shortcuts' item of the interface is described here.

If you telnet to the device, you're presented with a login prompt. Enter 'root' and you're in. No password needed. Then goto the directory '/usr/local/etc/dvdplayer' and edit the file 'NetworkBrowser.ini'. My file has one shortcut in it, and looks like this:

This file can be edited by using 'vi'. If you're not familiar with vi, have a quick look here.

Please note that if you would like more then one shortcut in this file, you'll need to change the second line (num=1) to the number of shortcuts.

So with two shortcuts, it would look like this:

Asus has now release firmware update version 1.07, but at this point it's unclear what the changes are.

Oct 19th 2009:
Asus has just released a new firmware. Version 1.11N. Changes for this release are:

1.Improve the compatibility of HDMI cable
2.Add video/audio information when pressing DISPLAY button twice
3.Add thumbnail view for picture browsing
4.Add more setting choices of subtitle such as color, font size, and location etc.
5.Add sorting ways for easy file searching

Dec 7th 2009:
Another new firmware has just been released. Update includes:

1.Improve the compatibility of HDMI cable
2.Add video/audio information when pressing “DISPLAY” button twice

5.Add sorting ways for easy file searching

Dec 10th 2009:
Yet another new firmware release by Asus.
This time it includes a ton of new features:

1.Add BD iso file support
2.Add Win7 network neighborhood connection support
3.Improve HDMI compatibility to support SONY W5500 series
4.Improve network connectivity
5.Add FLAC ID3 support
6.Add Ken Burns effect
7.Add TimeJump function by using right/left key to skip part of the video. We provide 5/10/15/20/30 minutes options.
8.Provide the flexibility for firmware downgrade
9.Change Music Shuffle function. Will play the music under the folder when you press music shuffle button instead of playing all music files in the storage device.
10.If upgrade is failed due to any unanticipated accidence happen such as incomplete firmware download or power failure, please re-install again.

Jan 15th 2010:
Another firmware update. Update includes:

1. The music won't be stopped when press SETUP and then HOME button of the remote controller.
2. There will be no audio signal come out from AV output after power off and then power on the system.
3. IP address can be changed from the default one (198.168.0.2).
4. Enhance the interface of OSD.



Feb 15th 2010:
Some nice new features and some bugfixes in this months firmware update.

1. Add BD iso navigation and subtitle identification

1. Fix UPnP bug: wrong data information
2. Fix Timezone setting bug: can't stop issue
3. Fix Clear key does not work when key in encrypted string
4. Improve JiPin 8042 HDMI compatibility

A very small update to the firmware this month.

1. Improve HDMI compatibility with certain Toshiba TV set.



Jun 7th 2010:
Looks like a very nice update this month, bringing the firmware to version 1.27.

1. Add 5000 Internet TV Channels
2. Add RSS News
3. Add stock inquiry
4. Add support for wireless headset (only ASUS HS-1000W is capable for current)
5. Add support for external optical disk drive with homemade VCD/DVD (only ASUS SDRW-0D1S-U is capable for current)



Jul 5th 2010:
Update to version 1.29

1. Add support for Dolby TrueHD/DDP downmix
2. Fix it cant play some files from AV out when set Audio digital out as SPDIF LPCM



Aug 13th 2010:

1.Improve TrueHD compatibility with Sony receiver STRDH800
2.Resolve Samba Network Neighborhood detection problem.

Nov 8th 2010:

A huge list of updates this month.
1. Add Podcast media service
2. Shorten the time of samba scanning
3. Improve HDMI compatibility
4. Fix photo slide show issue: system will be reset when playing some jpg files
5. Fix weather service issue: reset issue
6. Fix it cant play OGG file
7. Fix ASUS RT-11N firewall issue.
8. Fix exif issue: cant show correctly
9. Fix volume UI issue: sometimes cant disappear
10. Fix stopping photo with music issue: the system will stop photo first and then music
11. Fix file copy issue: the File copy UI cant disappear
12. Change the audio driver firmware



Mar 1th 2011:
Update to version 1.35

1. Added MKV header compression format support
2. Fixed the bug: The N letter of Greek subtitle cannot be displayed correctly on the screen.





Jun 20th 2011:
Update to version 1.39

1. Fix the HDD hanging issue when plugging external Buffalo HDD into O!Play.
